What is Residual Current Monitoring and why does it matter?

Leakage currents to earth are a natural phenomenon in any electrical installation. Typically, a very low current that flows from live parts of the installation to earth in the absence of an insulation fault, the leakage current can increase over time as the electrical installation ages. Unlike Residual Current Devices (RCD), RCMs help improve safety by warning the user of an increasing leakage current ? without disconnecting faulty circuits.
